Sip and Sculpt at CAW
A night to celebrate Joseph Cornell and expression.
Service Description
Creative Arts Workshops studio is open for us to gather and create! Friday, February 17, 2023 - 7pm-9ish $75.00 per participant Appetizers, sips, and materials provided. Natalie Russell, teacher and artist will share her admiration for this artist. Natalie has gathered many, many odds and ends, bric-a-brac, (love that word😉)driftwood, science paraphernalia, maps, fabrics; simply lots of collage materials for us to work with. I am also repurposing old drawers as our ready-made wooden boxes! You will make art in our time that is inspired by Joseph Cornell’s profoundly unique process of expression. His passion for science, nature, astronomy, toys, maps and current affairs are all things that we can easily relate to. It’s just so fun to play with found objects, shapes, colors, textures, driftwood, beautiful images, tools and glues! There are endless ways to juxtapose things into their own little box. It is also fascinating to find, or attach new meaning to things via their inter-relatedness. Cornell's work opens up this magical way of speaking through objects, images, color and arrangement contained in a small familiar space. He took this familiar art form, the shadow box, to a profound place. The beauty, mystery, passionate devotion, and wild success of his life and work are fascinating to learn more and more about. You don’t need to bring anything but yourself. However, if you have any odds and ends hanging around in your space that you are not quite sure why you cling to....broken ceramics, stones, toys, article or images torn from a page, notes to yourself, or quotes you believe in....these are the things that ‘bricolage’ ‘montage’ art are ripe for. So open up that little forgotten junk-drawer and grab a handful. Give some random keepsakes their own stage! We all have collections of interesting and sentimental things to bring, or not. It’s all good.
