Service Description
Pangalay Dance Workshop Participants will learn the aesthetics of Pangalay Tau’Sug/Sulukas a foundation for pangalay dancing that manifests within local-cultural contexts. The workshop will include a vital lecture component to bring participants into a better understanding of what the “people of the Sug” strive for in performing the movement motifs of pangalay dancing. Luncheon option: Our local culinary landmark, Karenderya will be offering a luncheon after the workshop at an additional fee. Round out this delightful morning with delicious Filipino inspired cuisine by local Chef Paolo Mendoza. Workshop: $30 Workshop with luncheon: $50 Desiree Quintero (PhD) teaches at Leeward Community College on Oahu, Hawaiʻi, in the Filipino Studies Program, and she has lectured in the dance program at the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa campus. As an Ethnochoreologist, Desiree specializes in dances found in the Philippines and Malaysia. Desiree was awarded a research fellowship by the Asian Cultural Council, NYC, which made it possible for her to conduct six months of additional fieldwork in the Philippines and in Malaysia in 2019. Prior to that time, Desiree alternated between residing in Kuala Lumpur and Sabah, Malaysia, as well as in the northern Philippines during her doctoral work from 2011-2016. Her research and dance practice closely align with “movement as culture,” particularly among maritime peoples in Southeast Asia. Desiree was a co-founder of the Mahalohalo Kolintang Ensemble in Hawaii (2008-2011), teaches pangalay sessions virtually, and has been sponsored by the Manilatown Heritage Foundation in San Francisco, teaching in-person workshops in January 2022 and upcoming Spring 2023. She is a lifetime member of the Philippine Folkdance Society.

Cancellation Policy
CAW will fully refund any program or event purchase, if the request is made in writing via email at least 24 hours before the first date or the date of the series, program, event, or food tour. There will be no refund made after the date of the first event or program if no communications have been made. CAW can also transfer any balance to a gift card to be applied to another program or event. CAW will refund any party or private group deposit up to two weeks before the date of the event.
